ATHENS AND FERRIS GAME CANCELED
FERRIS — The Athens Hornets and the Ferris Yellowjackets game was canceled due to weather in Ferris Friday.
The game was put into a delay before kickoff, and was called around 9 p.m. The game is not scheduled to be made up.
Athens (1-2) is scheduled to return to action Friday as they face Bullard in the final non-district game of the year. Bullard (1-3) lost 20-19 to Chapel Hill Friday.
Kemp wins shootout with Commerce Tigers
KEMP – Fresh off their first win of 2018, the Kemp Yellowjackets returned home to host the Commerce Tigers on Thursday in a rematch of last year’s third round playoff game. The game was moved back a day because of impending weather.
Kemp defeated Commerce 35-27 to improve to 2-1 overall.
Kemp got going on the first play with a 59-yard touchdown run by running back Desmond Jones. Commerce would then march down the field but settle for a field goal to cut it to 7-3.
After a Yellowjacket fumble, the Tigers gained the 10-7 lead after a 14-yard touchdown run by quarterback Brad Caldwell.
As the second quarter began, Commerce missed a field goal and Kemp responded with a 51-yard touchdown catch by receiver Darel Booker and a 31-yard touchdown run by Jones to regain the 21-10 advantage.
The Tigers answered once again with a five-yard touchdown run from Caldwell and a 46-yard touchdown run by running back Zav Basham for the 24-21 lead with 6:08 until halftime.
After a 66-yard touchdown reception from receiver Brock Dedie and a nine-yard touchdown run by quarterback Cameron Clamon, the Yellowjackets took the 35-24 halftime lead.
With 2:39 remaining in the game, Commerce broke through for a field goal to trail 35-27. However, Kemp ran out the clock on their next drive and improved to 2-1 with the home win.
Desmond Jones led Kemp with two rushing touchdowns. Clamon threw for two touchdowns and ran for one.
The Yellowjackets will next host Dallas Christian Academy at home on Friday.
